It’s official: Paul McCartney will perform in public in San Diego for the first time in 38 years.

Now 72 and back on the road yet again for a U.S. summer stadium, the tireless rock icon and his band will will play at Petco Park on Sept. 28. It will mark the veteran solo star and former Beatle’s first concert here since his 1976 show with Wings at the San Diego Sports Arena.

San Diego Padres’ officials are billing the concert here as the “crown jewel’ in the 10th anniversary of Petco Park. Discussions began 8 months ago between the Padres, who operate Petco Park, McCartney’s representatives and AEG Live/Goldenvoice, the promoter of McCartney’s ongooing “Out There” concert tour. Word of the concert first came out Tuesday, minus some key details.

Capacity for the concert will be just over 42,000 and will include seating on the field and in the stands.

Tickets for the Sept. 28 Petco park show will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on July 18 at all Ticketmaster outlets, online atticketmaster.com and by phone at (800) 745-3000. As of this writing, the Petco park date is not yet listed on either McCartney or Ticketmaster’s websites.

There will be a pre-sale for American Express Card holders from April 14 to 17. A pre-sale will also be held for Padres season ticket members,beginning July 17.
