While The Beatles had several peaks together collectively, the band members didn’t always see it that way. Take Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which is often called the greatest album of all time. Neither George Harrison nor Ringo Starr had a great time making that record.

George described being bored by the “assembly process” the band went through during the Sgt. Pepper sessions. For his part, Ringo wasn’t thrilled about all the sitting-around the band did making the album. (He compared it to being a session musician.)

On “She’s Leaving Home,” Ringo didn’t even have a drum part to play. Overall, Sgt. Pepper was very much a Paul McCartney project. That hints at another reason Ringo didn’t enjoy making the album.

In an interview published in the Anthology project, Ringo said he generally preferred playing songs John Lennon wrote to those penned by Paul. It was a matter of the songwriters’ individual styles.

While Paul loved the early rock of Little Richard and later penned the crushing “Helter Skelter,” he loved pop music and the old-time style crooner he showcased in “When I’m Sixty-Four.” And, as on “Yesterday” and “Eleanor Rigby,” he wasn’t afraid of string arrangements on his songs.

John was much more of a rocker. While Paul was writing songs like “Good Day Sunshine” and “Rigby” for the Revolver album, John’s sound was getting heavier on songs like “Rain” and “Tomorrow Never Knows.” That was the sort of stuff Ringo liked playing drums on.

In Anthology, Ringo spoke of how the two sides of the Lennon-McCartney partnership began going their separate ways in the late ’60s. “By then it was Lennon or McCartney,” he said. “It was up to about 80% separately written songs.”

Ringo didn’t need to wait for the publishing credits on the album to know which track came which bandmate. “I could tell which were John’s songs,” Ringo said. “I always preferred to play on them — they always had a bit more rock ‘n’ roll to them.”

If you’ve ever heard Ringo talk about Beatles songs he loves, it won’t be a big surprise to learn he preferred John’s music. “Rain,” Ringo’s all-time favorite Fab Four track (at least for his drumming), ranks among John’s finest work.

On several occasions, he’s also pointed to John’s “Yer Blues” as one of the high points from his time with The Beatles. “‘Yer Blues,’ you can’t top it,” he also said in Anthology. “It was this group that was together; it was like grunge rock of the sixties, really. Grunge blues.”

John didn’t stop rocking there, of course. Ringo must have enjoyed playing other hard-edged Lennon tracks like “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and “Come Together.” (Ringo also played drums on John’s first solo record.)

Of course, Paul had his moments, too. After The Beatles bashed their way through “Helter Skelter,” you can hear Ringo call out in a mix of pain and satisfaction. “I’ve got blisters on my fingers,” he says.

GEORGE AND RINGO’S HANDWRITTEN LYRICS … Hit Auction Block https://beatlesarama.com/george-and-ringos-handwritten-lyrics-hit-auction-block/ Sat, 11 Jan 2020 18:34:44 +0000 https://beatlesarama.com/?p=12509 from TMZ.com

There’s a special piece of Beatles memorabilia up for sale … handwritten lyrics to a classic song from the ‘White Album’ scribbled by George Harrison and Ringo Starr!!!

The lyrics to George’s signature song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” are penned on the back of a studio recording sheet, and it’s going up for sale through the memorabilia company Moments in Time — and they’re hawking this slice of Beatles history for $195,000.

It’s pretty cool … the lyric sheet is a working draft used during the hit song’s recording way back in 1968 at EMI Studios in London.

George started the top of the sheet by writing, “I Look at You all see the love there thats sleeping — While my guitar gently weeps” and continued at the bottom with, “While my Guitar Gently weeps as I’m sitting here doing nothing but aging still my guitar G W.”

All the writing in between is scribbled by Ringo … including an effort to work out a misspelling on the side of the sheet.

The song is one of George’s most popular and well-liked tunes, and it’s on the famous ‘White Album’ — widely regarded as one of the greatest rock albums ever.

Beatles’ lyrics are hardly ever found in private collections, so this is a rare chance to own a piece of history … if you’ve got six figures lying around.

Ringo Starr “loved” Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle’s Beatles movie ‘Yesterday’ https://beatlesarama.com/ringo-starr-loved-richard-curtis-and-danny-boyles-beatles-movie-yesterday/ Tue, 17 Dec 2019 20:14:13 +0000 https://beatlesarama.com/?p=12494 Ringo Starr has given the thumbs up to Yesterday, the recent Beatles movie directed by Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis.

Speaking from the red carpet of the Global Citizen Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, Ringo appeared to not remember about the film, but gave his seal of approval after being reminded by his Bond actress wife Barbara Bach.

“Oh yeah – I loved it,” Ringo explained.
“I mean, what a great concept. You know?” he added.

The movie, which hit cinemas in June, follows the story of a fledgling musician whose life takes a dramatic turn when he realises he’s one of only a handful of people left in the world that remembers The Beatles songs.
Actor Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik, a wannabe musician who makes a name for himself by fraudulently claiming The Beatles songs are his own creations.

Himesh was also in attendance, but missed the arrival of the legendary Beatles drummer.

“That’s absolutely insane,” he said, after finding out about his attendance.
When asked what he’d say if he met Ringo, Himesh added: “I really don’t know. I’d just say ‘thank you’ to be honest. What do you ask Ringo Starr? I just really don’t know how they did it.” Jesturing towards the Albert Hall, Himesh added: “It’s a big room, maybe I’ll be able to say hello…”

Meanwhile, Boyle and Curtis previously revealed how both Starr and Olivia Harrison – the widow of George Harrison – sent notes about how much they enjoyed the film after seeing it.

“You have to write to them and explain the concept so they’ll let you associate the music with it and then also we sent them the finished film, just out of courtesy,” they explained.

“…We got a lovely message back from Ringo and Olivia, George’s widow. I don’t think Paul has seen it but he saw the trailer and said ‘The trailer seems to work – that’s a surprise!’”

Last month, McCartney also revealed that he had snuck into a cinema to watch the film, and confirmed that he “loved it”.
