The Rolling Stones thrill Paul McCartney with Beatles tribute

The Rolling Stones served up a treat for old pal Sir Paul McCartney at the Desert Trip festival in California on Friday night (07Oct16) when they performed a classic Beatles track.

McCartney, who will headline the inaugural California music event on Saturday (08Oct16), was watching from a VIP suite as Mick Jagger introduced Come Together as a tune from one of the band’s favourite combos.

The Beatle cheered and pumped his fist as the Stones played their version of the Lennon and McCartney tune, while he ate with his wife Nancy Shevell.

The Rolling Stones brought the first night of the Desert Trip to a close in style with an energetic hits set, which included Start Me Up, Wild Horses, It’s Only Rock & Roll (But I Like It), Honky Tonk Woman, and Mixed Emotions, a track the band had not played live for 25 years prior to a warm-up gig in Las Vegas earlier in the week.

They also treated fans to their cover of Eddie Taylor’s Ride ‘Em On Down, a song from their new album Blue & Lonesome, which the group recorded in just three days. Jagger and his bandmates announced the release of the blues covers album on Thursday (06Oct16).

The historic gig wasn’t lost on the singer, who thanked the 65,000-plus fans in Indio, California for attending the first night of the inaugural Desert Trip festival.

He said, “All these bands playing here this weekend have been playing for more than 50 years and it’s pretty amazing that you’re still coming out to see us.”

The group ended a stunning two hour set with Sympathy For The Devil, Brown Sugar, and Jumping Jack Flash, and an encore of You Can’t Always Get What You Want and (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction as a firework display lit up the sky above the Desert Trip.

The Stones closed a night that began with a set from Bob Dylan. McCartney and Neil Young will perform on Saturday (08Oct16), and Roger Waters and The Who will close out the festival on Sunday (09Oct16).
